Is shouting dreams at passers-by
again. At night he sleeps in
Doorways and wakes up screaming.

More than that once. I know it now
Because I saw the Purple Heart
Clutched in his hand, when I found
The poor man's corpse on the
Avenue he haunted like a ghost.

Though we don't want to take the test
A pool of blood brings me perspective

Pure chance can stop a fatality
Heroic evenings can be stumbled upon
Nobody dreams of the reality
Telling the family is one tough task

The shocked tears of loved ones pack a punch

There are no cliches to be had,
I admit. There is no symbolism,
Dying roses paradoxically representing
Our undying love, or archetypes in which you,
The knight in lackluster armour, save this damsel
Who is quite distressed by your quixotic notions.
This isn't filled with secret strolls under the
Milky moonligh

Inspired by the prompt "The Madman on the Avenue" in the Poetry Screams contest [link]
It got me thinking about the terrible things war does to people and some of the Viet Nam vets that I've known.
*UPDATE*
I just found out that I took 3rd place in the contest with this! Be sure to check out the other winning entries as well [link] and spend a bit of time persusing all the entries. Not everyone was lucky enough to place but there's some fine writing to see that deserves a look.
